James Porter is a Cable Route Engineer working for ASN, in the Greenwich office, London. James has experience working on numerous large scale submarine cable projects, he is responsible for the cable routing and cable design from early concept phase through to cable manufacturing. During this process James is closely involved in the marine survey, managing the survey subcontractor on a day-to-day basis, supporting with technical queries and route development. James has a professional background in surveying, working initially onshore, then evolving to work in the offshore survey industry. Working as a surveyor, James has broad experience of all survey techniques, including hydrographic, geophysical and geotechnical. Work has included large scale windfarm surveys, as well as smaller scale navigational charting surveys. James also has experience project managing marine surveys, including a cross-channel cable route survey campaign. Working in cable route design, James is acutely aware of the challenges facing new cable systems. Many variables impact the safety and resilience of new submarine cable systems; however, seabed congestion is becoming the primary constraint in certain geographic regions. James will present more details on this topic during the SubOptic conference.
