John Downie is currently a Research Fellow with Corning Research and Development Corporation in Corning, NY.  He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1989.  Prior to joining Corning, he worked at the NASA Ames Research Center for 10 years.   In 1999, he joined Corning in the central research organization Science & Technology to work on optical networks and optical communications.  His current research interests at Corning are mainly focused on optical fibers and transmission systems for all length scales.
